Waconia Family Recognized as Honorary Caregivers at Relay for Life Event
The 5th annual Relay for Life of Waconia held Aug. 15 at the Carver County Fairgrounds names a Waconia family this year’s Honorary Caregivers. Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society event series that hosts events all over the country.
According to the Sun Patriot, the Schiffler family, which consists of Shanna Schiffler and her four children, is this year’s pick. Shanna’s husband, Wes Schiffler, passed away last September after being diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive brain tumor.
“My reaction was utter disbelief and devastation that my kids may lose their dad and I may lose my husband,” Shanna told the Sun Patriot. “However, I had hope for a miracle.”
She added: “This experience has changed me so much. I think I’ve become much better at ‘rolling with the punches’ and realizing I can get through a lot more than I think I can,” she said. “I’ve learned I can’t completely plan my life the way I’d like to, but I can do the best with the situation I’m in on any given day. And I’ve learned that the kindness of family, friends, and even strangers is sometimes the only thing that helps me (and others) through a day. As much as I wish I could go back to my life before cancer, I like the person I am now so much better. I’ve learned so many life-changing lessons.”
Waconia’s event had raised more than $62,000 before the event took place. For more information on Relay for Life, go to relayforlife.org.
