‘Valiant Vito’ to Be Honored at Waconia’s Relay for Life
Vito Skaro captured the hearts of people across the country and world last year when his fight against a fast-growing, cancerous brain tumor went viral. And at this year’s Waconia Relay for Life, Vito is being named the Survivor of the Year, according to the Sun Patriot.
Vito was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in August 2014, just before his first birthday. After months of treatment and surgery, doctors were able to remove all of his tumor in January, according to the newspaper. He’ll be turning 2 in September.
“It’s touching because at that time it was right when we were getting discharged, and when we finally felt we could actually say that he was going to start beating this because for a while it felt like he wasn’t,” Nicole Skaro, Vito’s mom, told the newspaper. “I’m still amazed every day at how much other people can care for your kid.”
Waconia’s Relay for Life is set for Aug. 14 and 15 at the Carver County Fairgrounds.
