Selling Your Home? Here’s Your Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is nearly here and if you’ve got a home on the market, you might want to make sure it’s in the best shape possible for potential buyers. Here are a few tips to get your house in tip-top shape:

Let the sun shine in.

Open those drapes and blinds and let the brilliant, warm sun shine into your home. But, make sure the window panes are streak free, and all your window treatments and blinds are sparkling. Realtor Mag, a publication by the National Association of Realtors, suggests using a mixture of one part white vinegar to eight parts water and a drop or two of liquid dish soap on window glass. Also, professional organizers Time to Organize has 10 Ways to Use Vinegar on its blog.

Put some focus on the floors.

When a potential buyer walks into your home, welcome them with fresh, clean carpet and floors. Steam clean carpets (you can rent a cleaner at your local home improvement store for a small fee), use the proper cleaners on hardwoods to make them shine, and consider a professional for title or marble. Bottom line: clean floors can positively impact a buyer’s first impression.

Declutter and organize.

This one is kind of a no brainer, but definitely worth mentioning. Those looking to buy will look in every closet, cupboard and drawer to see what the home is working with. Make sure they’ll see form and function, rather than disorganization.

Put a little extra into deep cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms.

Kitchens and bathrooms can either really help you or hurt you when it comes to selling your home. Deep clean these spaces. You won’t regret it.

Wash the walls.

Grease, smoke, dust, food particles and other things can adhere to the walls and make them look dirty and dingy. Wash walls with a few drops of liquid dish soap and hot water. If you’re going to do this, go all the way and don’t just spot clean. Spot cleaning can make walls look even worse. House Beautiful has more details on stubborn stains here.

Get your exterior in shape.

Power wash siding or give it a fresh coat of paint. Mow the yard. Trim any deadwood from trees. Get rid of any debris in the driveway. Stage your patio or deck for entertaining. The exterior of your home is all about curb appeal, and that’s the first thing and last thing a potential buyer will see.
