15-Year-Old Graduates from Local Paradise Valley College
One graduate from Paradise Valley Community College finished school a little earlier than most. He finished the school year just like his other college friends, but after only two years of attending he walked across the graduation stage with four associate degrees. Not to mention Alexander “AJ” Gilman, of Paradise Valley, started college when he was 13 years old.
Ambitious doesn’t begin to describe this young man’s goal to finish school at such a young age; he doesn’t even have his driver’s license yet. “I would say I’m lucky,” AJ said in a USA Today article. “I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities, and a lot of people helped me, and I met a lot of amazing people.”
AJ spoke at the college’s commencement last Friday, as 255 of his peers listened to his story. In addition to his community college classes, he was also a student at Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center charter school. “I came to the premature conclusion that since everyone was older than me, I wouldn’t have any friends, no one would like me and all I had going for me was that I’m a math guy,” AJ said in the article.
After only two years of college, AJ earned associate degrees in business administration, science with an emphasis in mathematics, arts and general studies. According to USA Today, he has been accepted to Arizona State University’s Barrett, the Honors College and the W.P. Carey School of Business Leaders Academy.
Today, AJ receives his high school diploma at Paradise Valley High School.
