Backpack Tutoring Has Over 500 Minnetonka High School Students Helping Kids Learn
More than 500 Minnetonka High School students volunteer their spare time to tutor at Folwell Performing Arts Magnet School in Minneapolis. Even teachers need help sometimes, and with the number of students in the classroom with tutors increasing, it is reducing teacher stress.
Backpack Tutoring is a program designed to allow any high school student to volunteer Monday through Thursday, for as many days as they want. Kindergarten to third grade students are paired with a tutor to catch up on homework, get more information on studied topics, and most importantly, feel supported. It is significant that these kids form a bond with the high schoolers so they can each learn individually, rather than struggle in a group.
Minnetonka is hoping that neighboring schools catch on to the outreach program. It is great for these older students to teach and mentor younger ones as a mechanism to learn interpersonal relationship skills and volunteerism! The Minneapolis kids are grateful for the Backpack Tutoring program, and the teachers are even more thankful.
