Littleton Criterium: The NASCAR of Bicycling

Littleton Criterium Race – (watch this video!) is one of the first of its kind in the country. “Criterium racing is the cycling equivalent of NASCAR,” said Bill Nagel, co-owner of Pedal, on the city’s website. Started in 2013, this new event was a huge turnout a few weeks ago when it was held downtown Littleton.

According to The City of Littleton’s website, the event is sponsored both by the city and the Pedal Bicycle Shop. The Littleton Criterium was an exciting day for racers and spectators alike with a closed, figure-eight circuit where fields of up to 120 riders averaged 28 mph with top speeds more than 40 mph.

“Racers are in large groups called a peloton and due to the closed downtown circuit, spectators are able to get in close and enjoy the excitement of the racing,” said Nagel in the article
