STAR Center Playground Fundraiser – Aug. 16
Two and a half years ago, Lucy Jane Miller created a playground for the Sensory Therapies and Research Center – a part of the Greenwood Village Community. The purpose was to provide therapy for families and a playground that children can use as a learning tool.
“Parents feel different when they’re in the playground. It’s normal, it’s not special needs. You’re not here because your child is weird or different – you can be on the playground like every other parent,” said Miller, founder and executive director of the STAR Center and Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, in The Denver Post article.
Since the center opened in 2005, it has treated children, and some adults, who have sensory processing disorders. According to the article, most common are people who are over- or under-responsive to outside stimuli. Miller has a Ph.D. in early childhood special education and research.
“I wanted the kids to be introduced to the outdoors as something really positive,” Miller said in the article.
There will be a ‘Playground rock!’ fundraiser on Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Star Center, 5420 S. Quebec Street in Greenwood Village. Visit www.spdfoundation.net/playgroundrock for more information on the upcoming event.
