Denver South High School senior Dominic Ellerbee is considered a musical genius by his peers, teachers and many others. According to ABC7, at just 18 years old Ellerbee has composed, orchestrated and choreographed his first musical.
“He told me at the end of his sophomore year, he said, ‘Ms. R, I’m writing a musical. Can we do it when I’m a senior?’ I said, ‘Dom, if you write a musical, we will do it when you’re a senior,'” Dr. Jennifer Rinaldi, the high school’s theater director, told the news station.
The musical is about moving on and taking on opportunities, Ellerbee told ABC7. Some of his inspiration came from the struggles he and his family faced, including being homeless for months after losing their home when his mom lost her job last year.
Now, Ellerbee’s family has their own place, but there is a lot of financial uncertainty still, the news outlet reported. But, Ellerbee has been offered a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and he’s going.
