Avon Freshman Wins State Championship in State Track and Field
Avon athletes really proved themselves at last weekend’s state track and field finals in Bloomington. Freshman Taylor Nicholson finished in 4:51.88 bringing home an individual championship. Competing against the entire state of Indiana was pressure enough, but after Nicholson finished fifth last fall, this season’s victory was quite the improvement.
“I was running against a lot of the same people, so I knew how they raced,” said Nicholson in the Flyer Group newspapers. “I was boxed in for a little bit on the inside, but I got out and took off on the last lap. I ran it like a 400.” Setting her eye on the prize, she made quite an impression for the school district that day.
Avon coach Stephanie Chenoweth assisted the state champion with her training, and saw the transformation happen. “She’s much more confident – in her workouts, in her coaches and in general,” Chenoweth said in the recent article. “She’s matured quite a bit in how to race, from beginning to end. What she did in this race was out of this world.”
Now that the school year has ended, Nicholson and other track and field athletes keep preparing for next year’s meet. It is a year round commitment that state champions and future competitors have to stay focused on. Congratulations Orioles on another great season in sports.
