Annual BBQ Competition Includes Avon’s Grey Street Owner
Grey Street BBQ, of Avon, is going to represent the community in the Sam’s Club National Tour on June 28th. This barbeque competition is similar to the shows on Food Network, where people come and challenge their flavors against other BBQ masters. Nathan Dexter runs the popular Grey Street BBQ, and is ready to compete.
“We’ve placed in the top 10 in at least one category in all four competitions,” Dexter said in the Flyer Group Newspaper article. Stopping in Indianapolis, the competition will host 28 teams this year located at 5805 Rockville Road. Dexter said he decided to compete simply out of his love for barbequing, grilling, and home smokers.
Television shows such as BBQ Pitmaster has inspired many cooks to participate in the growing trend of cooking outdoors. The annual event is hosted by Pitmaster Michael McDearman, who is the author of Get Fired Up Foods. There are four categories: chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. The top six will advance to a regional competition, and the top ten will receive a cash prize.
“It is stressful to get everything turned in on time,” Dexter said in the article. Preparation for the event can get pretty tricky since timing is very important to produce the perfect food. His wife Kim helps take part in the competition by making sure the boxes from the cooking site get to the judging location before time runs out. “I would say that there are times that she has the most stressful job,” Dexter said.
Practice makes perfect for Grey Street, and they are ready to take on the other 25 teams. “You’ll see many different types of smokers at the competitions,” he said in the article. “Everything from home-made smokers, to smokers that cost of $15,000. We’ve used several different kinds, but have found that Humphrey’s Smokers have given us the best results.”
The Indianapolis Sam’s Club BBQ Tour starts at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. this Saturday. It is a free event that is open to the public.
