‘Weigh to Fundraise’ Needs Donations for Summer Camp for Cancer Kids
The Weigh to Fundraise drive will gather household items and clothing for kids with cancer on Saturday, May 31. Arizona Camp Sunrise is hosting the drive at Summit School of Ahwatukee located at 4515 E. Muirwood Drive, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The plan is to turn the donated items into money once everything is collected and weighed.
This summer camp experience provides a fun and free place to support kids diagnosed with cancer and their siblings. Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks main goal is to keep things positive for the children. The upcoming fundraiser donations will help continue the fun activities throughout each summer.
According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News article, Arizona Camp Sunrise (ACS) was formerly funded through the Arizona Cancer Society. Just over a year ago ACS announced it would no longer be funding programs for kids nationally, so a group of volunteers from Camp Sunrise decided to preserve camp and the programs through their community donations.
“We feel like it’s a quality of life issue,” said Barb Nicholas, camp director in the recent article. “These kids that are battling cancer, or their siblings that are in the throws of it as well, they should have the opportunity to do all things that other kids get to do. We feel that it’s important for them to have that opportunity to come together, to support each other, and to grow and have fun just like any other child.”
Not only does Camp Sunrise provide a week long summer camp, they also host retreats throughout the year and a day camp at the Summit School, in Ahwatukee. Volunteers are there to help the children have a great time, and all programs are free for kids with cancer. For more information on the camps or programs visit www.azcampsunrise.org.
