A new first-of-its-kind project for the Kyrene School District has a dog walking the halls of Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary.

According to Ahwatukee Foothills News, Bolt, a blonde Labrador and Golden Retriever mix, is a highly skilled assistance dog. He comes from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), which breeds, raises and trains its dogs to become helpful assistants in a variety of settings.

This decision has been in the works for more than a year, and Bolt’s new gig at the elementary school is aimed at helping motivate all children, especially those with disabilities, achieve.

“Facility Dogs by their mere presence help children stay on difficult tasks and increases their motivation to achieve,” Principal Cheryl Greene told the newspaper.
