Desert Vista Violinist Wins Dorothy Vanek Youth Concerto Championship
Desert Vista High School student and musician Bobae Johnson has become the first violinist to win the Dorothy Vanek Youth Concerto Championship.
According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News, Johnson, who has been playing violin for six years, is no stranger to winning with a number of awards such as the Arizona ASTA (American String Teachers Association) and AMEA (Arizona Music Educators Association) All-State Solo and Ensemble competition under her belt.
“I just love music in general, especially getting to play it,” she told the newspaper. “There are a lot of things you can do with music like orchestra, chamber and solos. There are so many opportunities and they’re all really amazing.”
The Dorothy Vanek Youth Concerto Competition is open to any high school student, and students select their own piece to perform for judges, the newspaper reported. Prizes are given out for first, second and third place.
