Generous volunteers and donors from around Ahwatukee will help children around the world this holiday season.

According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News, Operation Christmas Child, a local nonprofit, collected nearly 90,000 shoeboxes filled with gifts for delivery overseas.

The group of volunteers from Ahwatukee and Chandler collected a record 76,800 gift-filled boxes, to go with the 12,800 collected in other areas of Arizona, the article said.

The effort is part of the international nonprofit Samaritan’s Purse, which has distributed shoebox gifts to children in over 130 countries since 1993 in places like the Philippines, Indonesia, Peru, Mongolia, Bangladesh and here in the United States, according to the article.
