Ahwatukee Groups Come Together to Send Care Packages to Troops
After months of fundraising, and a little shopping, members of the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC) packed 150 gift boxes to send to troops overseas.
According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News, the ARC’s Support Our Troops Committee has been sending these packages to troops for the last four or five years. In the past, the committee has set a goal of 125 packages, but with help from local schools, Costco and all the clubs at the ARC, the committee was able to pack 150 boxes this year, the newspaper reported.
“We start in September and try to get donations,” Mary Williams, a member of the Support Our Troops Committee, told the Ahwatukee Foothills News. “We reach out to the schools and try to get the schools involved in it. We get the veterans organizations to provide support. It’s a big group effort with a lot of people involved. I love it. It gives me goose bumps and tears in my eyes.”
The boxes will be taken to Luke Air Force Base and will sent to troops overseas as part of their Operation Thunderbox program, the newspaper said.
