Ahwatukee Burrito Restaurant Still Going Strong After 34 Years in Community
As The Original Burrito Company nears its 35th year in business, the owners are looking to keep it all in the family.
According to the Ahwatukee Foothills News, The Original Burrito Company has been a staple of the community since 1982 when Tommy Martinez and his sister Margaret DeLaCruz first opened the restaurant.
But it almost never happened. According to the report, when the duo presented their business plan to the owners of Ahwatukee Plaza, on the southwest corner of Elliot Road and 51st Street, the plaza owners liked the restaurant idea, but had concerns over funding.
Ultimately, Martinez convinced them to give him and his sister a break, and the rest is history, according to the report. “From day one, our business was never in the red,” Martinez told the newspaper.
In the 80s, DeLaCruz, now 66, managed the restaurant in the evenings while Martinez, now 73, was day manager. Today, DeLaCruz’s daughter Monica, 43, manages the restaurant, her granddaughter Nina, 22, works at the counter, and grandson Diego, 11, already helps with small chores, the article said.
