9-1-1 Texting Option Is Now Live in Maricopa County

Residents in Ahwatukee and across Maricopa County have another option to reach 9-1-1 dispatch services: texting.

According to the Paradise Valley Independent, Maricopa County, which is home to Ahwatukee, just launched texting services to reach 9-1-1 services. The new motto for the county’s 9-1-1 service: “Call if you can. Text if you can’t.”

The feature will make it easier for those with hearing and speech impairments to contact and communicate with their public safety departments when a crisis occurs, the report said, and the new service will provide a line of communication for domestic violence victims or those worried about being heard by an assailant while in imminent danger.

The launch of the service is through collaborative efforts of the Maricopa Association of Governments, Maricopa Region 9-1-1 and other public agencies working with members of the disability community, the Arizona Center for Disability Law and the National Association of the Deaf.
